I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth…”
The Presbyterian Church (USA) Administrative Commission for Mid Councils has approved the reconfiguration of New Jersey’s presbyteries into the following four entities:
The Presbytery of Central New Jersey (Central)
Presbytery of Northeast New Jersey (North East)
Presbytery of the Highlands of New Jersey (North West)
The Presbytery For Southern New Jersey (South)
We are excited for the transformative work that lies ahead during this intentional year of transition. If you have questions about how you, your congregation, ministry or community fit into the New Jersey Missional Communities structure, please feel free to contact us at [email protected]
We offer our deep gratitude to the former presbyteries. We honor the work that has been done, even as we carry forward the lessons and legacies of that work into our new life together.
What about per capita?
Keep paying per capita to the presbytery of which you’ve been a part. The underlying corporations of the presbyteries will continue to exist for a while during the transition, as they finish audits, transfers, and other corporate business. You’ll get a notice about when to pay per capita to your new presbytery.
When is the Presbytery meeting?
The Synod Administrative Commission has set the first meeting of the Central Presbytery meeting for March 23, start time to be set. Stay tuned for additional information.
Who’s who on staff?
The current staff will remain in place to see us through the transition for at least a few months. The staffing plan was approved by the AC on Tuesday evening, March 2. A contact sheet with roles and responsibilities will be shared soon.
Who’s working on the transition?
Over the past several months, the presbytery moderators, stated clerks, and other leadership have been working on the transition. In the Central Presbytery a Core Transition Team has been established, and several specific teams have been created to focus on important areas of the life of the presbytery. An interim CPM and COM have been working on foundational documents to help the transition teams develop a plan for moving forward with that vital work. A current list of team members will be available later this week but will be changing as people are added to certain teams.
How can I participate?
There is room at the table! If you would like to participate on any of the Central transition teams or contribute your ideas about the transition, please contact the Synod Facilitator, Rev. Thia Reggio at [email protected].
What’s the timeline?
The transition allows for one full year (until March 1, 2022) for the presbyteries to have discerned everything that is needed to move forward. We anticipate that there will be a phased approach to the transition with certain milestones happening within a few months, some within six months, and the rest taking more of the allotted year. A more specific timeline will be posted when it’s available.
Will there be a Central directory?
Yes! A Central directory is in the works. In the meantime you can reach the staff at [email protected] if there is anyone you need to contact.
