Johnsonburg Update

Sunny greetings from Johnsonburg.

As NJ Presbytery staff and representatives, I write to you today with the news that overnight camp has been suspended for the 2020 summer season at Johnsonburg. This is sad news- it is our 60th summer. 🙁 However, with the guidelines in place for childcare centers and camps, it is apparent that how we would have to do camp would not be “camp”- masks on everyone, no salad bar/no dining hall, no shared equipment (think zipline, ropes course, balls, bats, archery, etc), cleaning in between every activity, no singing, no use of the gym, no hugging… and it goes on.     View video.

So, we look forward to this fall and to Summer 2021! We will put our energy into contacting every child this summer in various ways and may have some seasonal staff (a very small intentional community of young adults) who would be sheltering on campus and engaging in Bible Study, leadership development learning, discernment and doing a variety of projects, including reaching out to campers and guests.

One of the projects we are working on is #jburg2u. It is ‘camp in a box’ for all ages with some fun camp swag, recipes for easy ice cream and campfire snacks, crafts, faith formation pieces, discussion starters, prayer activities and more. This will go to every camper from 2019 and 2020. It will also be available to churches as an outreach piece for their Christian education programs. We will share more next week so this can be shared with the churches in each Presbytery.

A public announcement will go out this afternoon to everyone in the Johnsonburg database. Please let me know if you have any questions. I hope you are staying safe and I look forward to the next time we can be at Johnsonburg.

Thank you! Take care, Elise
