March 23, 2017 – The Dawe Lecture:  Dr. Randi Rashkover, of George Mason University, will engage us in the topic Comparative Learning: Judaism, Christianity and the Word -World Relation.  This is a free lecture open to everyone from 7:30 – 9 p.m. in Lake Chapel.  Registration is not required – you may simply show up!

April 19-20, 2017 – The Howie Center Events:  Shawna Bowman and Nanette Sawyer will lead worship, large group activities, and workshops related to Embodying God’s Story and Our Stories: Storytelling | Art | Worship.  There are a number of different events, beginning with community chapel on Wednesday, April 19, and ending with a labyrinth walk at mid-day on Thursday.   Please register at the link above for the events you will be attending.  Although everything is free, we would like to get an idea of how many will attend. 

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS (Note:  All of these will be held on the Richmond campus)

March 20-23, 2017 – Stewardship Comes in All Sizes, Shapes, and Colors:  It’s not too late to register for this four-day workshop featuring Dr. Deborah Rexrode, associate presbyter for stewardship at the Presbytery of the James, and Rev. Raymond Bonwell, corporate secretary of the PC(USA) Board of Pensions.  They will focus on telling the story and sharing the mission and vision of the congregation as a part of stewardship.  Cost is $250, including lunches on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Click here for more information and registration.

April 3 to May 4, 2107 – Christian Education Certification Course in Reformed Theology:  This is a hybrid workshop, with the first month (April 3-May 1) taking place at home and through BlackBoard, followed by three days on campus (May 2-4).  The workshop will meet the requirements for PCUSA certification, but is open to anyone of any denomination who has responsibility or interest in Christian Education in the church.  Cost is $295.  Led by Prof. Tom James.  Click here for more information and registration.

April 4-6, 2017 – Writing (Righting) Wrong: Memory, Resistance, Resilience:  Join Prof. Katie Geneva Cannon and Prof. Paula Owens Parker as they facilitate this workshop assessing and redressing the muted, masked, and mangled testimonies and the transgenerational experience of women, men, and children whose ancestors were enslaved Africans.  Cost is $195, including lunch on Wednesday.  Click here for more information and registration.

May 15-17, 2017 – The Gospel of Matthew: Challenges and Resources for Preachers Today:  This series of presentations and conversations, led by UPSem professors John Carroll, Frances Taylor Gench, and Richard Voelz, will open up the world of Matthew’s narrative and its presentation of the ministry and teaching of Jesus, provide orientation to distinctive theological contributions Matthew makes to the life of the church, and suggest resources and strategies for preaching, all in preparation for the lectionary Matthew cycle.  Cost is $250, and includes lunch on Tuesday.  Click here for more information and registration. 

SAVE THE DATE!

Seminary for a Day returns on Saturday, September 23, 2017.  This is an opportunity to spend the day learning from UPSem professors in an informal workshop setting, and hearing interesting and inspiring keynote addresses.  All for $25, including lunch!  This year’s keynote addresses will be made by Prof. Richard W. Voelz, UPSem’s newest preaching professor, and Prof. Luke Powery, dean of the Duke University Chapel and professor of homiletics there.  Registration will be available soon at www.upsem.edu/leadership-institute.
